Living on my own, people often ask me “don’t you get lonely being all by yourself” and my answer is simple – no! Being alone doesn’t necessarily mean that you are lonely, I have learnt over the years to love my own company. I can do what I want when I want and how I want!
Yes, there are days when I wish that I had someone to share stuff with and there are definitely days when I would love for someone else to cook dinner for a change (I mean it would really save me money on takeaways…!)But overall, I am happy that I live on my own!
Becoming a student has definitely changed my attitudes on that! As many of you will know, it can be stressful as hell living with other people, especially ones that are messy, noisy or even anti-social (we’ve all probably been one of these one time or another). In my first year of uni, I lived in halls and let’s just say it was an experience… The first week is always the best. You think you’re going to become besties, take it in turns to cook and everyone is really polite. Then by the end of the year, there has been a lot of arguments over shelf space in the fridge and many more arguments about doing the washing up! You can’t wait to be free and have your own space (minus the passive/aggressive notes being left everywhere about who’s turn it is to take out the bins – FYI I’d always end up doing it anyway).
I’m still at uni but I live in a studio flat so I don’t have to share a kitchen or bathroom with anyone – yaay! I like that I can come home from lectures and nap without being judged! Or not worry that I’ve spent ages cooking a meal for it to turn out crap but eat it anyway because I wasted so much time and effort on it (embarrassingly, this happens a lot… hence the dent in my bank account from takeaways)! I can also binge-watch a Netflix series without having to wait to watch it with someone!
2018 is the year of self-love, and loving your own company is an important part of that! Just remember, you may be on your own but that doesn’t mean that you are lonely. Surround yourself with people that make you happy! Of course, I’d love to have someone to share my life with but right now I’m content with where I am, and who knows what the future may bring… (Oh please let him be a good cook!)
p.s. do you live on your own or share with someone?
